Workplace and professional communication is a flourishing field of research. In the last few decades a lot of research has been done on various issues related to language and communication in workplace and professional contexts, with numerous case studies providing empirical evidence for the importance of language and communication in these contexts. This field of research has also been actively developing in non-English dominant contexts such as Hong Kong. This website focuses on the workplace and professional communication in Hong Kong and provides the introduction to the main theories, research methodologies and approaches in the field, and examples of some case studies from a range of workplaces in Hong Kong. We hope that the website will provide insights on the importance of workplace communication to everyone, especially to undergraduate students taking courses related to professional and workplace communication, fresh graduates who are getting ready to join the workforce soon, or professionals in Hong Kong and other countries who  are interested in language and communication issues in a workplace context.

About the field of study of ‘Workplace and Professional Communication’

Why is it important to study workplace and professional communication?

Language and communication are part of virtually every job and profession. From doing small every day task (e.g. sending and responding to e-mails, participating in meetings, etc.) to networking with colleagues all work-related tasks and goals are achieved through different types of talk. Effective communication is at the core of success of both individuals at work or of an organization as a whole. Studying the ways in which people communicate effectively is, therefore, of paramount importance.
